Smylodon Arcanus
A performative ceramic instrument depicting a saber-toothed tiger, one of the most powerful felines to have ever existed. The piece integrates three acoustic systems into a single ritual object: a noise aerophone evoking the animal’s roar, and two duct flutes shaped like the saber-toothed tiger’s fangs—making the sculptural and acoustic functions inseparable. When played simultaneously, the slight frequency offset between the two flutes generates acoustic beating, inducing an altered state of perception in the listener. The performer can activate each system independently or in combination, allowing for fluid transitions between the roar and the beating effect during live performance. Each piece is carefully packed to protect the fragile ceramic works and shipped in a handcrafted wooden box at no additional cost.
